Swiss airfields get ATC upgrade

December 18: EADS Defence & Security (DS) is to equip Swiss military airfields with a new military approach control system.
The dense air traffic of Central Europe is particularly challenging, combined with the mountainous terrain of Switzerland. EADS has been awarded a €130 million contract by the Swiss procurement authority Armasuisse for the installation of five approach control systems at Payerne, Emmen, Meiringen, Sion and Locarno by 2016.
The new systems, known as ‘MALS Plus’, will replace obsolete radars and will be used for approach control at the airfields and also for air surveillance within a large radius to coordinate military flight movements with civil air traffic.
