Chongqing Airport commences work on third runway

China’s Chongqing Airport held a groundbreaking ceremony for the airport’s CNY26.0 billion (USD4.1 billion) third runway and terminal 3A eastern station project.
According to media reports, construction work is scheduled to commence in 2012 and completed in 2015.
The project is expected to facilitate the airport’s capacity target of 45 million passengers, 1.1 million tonnes of cargo and 373,000 aircraft movements p/a by 2020. Chongqing Airport handled 227,300 tones of cargo for the year as of December 2011 and is targeting a 22% increase in annual passenger numbers to 19 million and cargo volume to 235,000 tonnes in 2011.
